1534: John of Leyden proclaims himself the Favorite of Heaven, runs naked through the streets of Munster, Germany, and forms a society free of laws or private property.
1976: John Lydon proclaims himself an “antichrist,” helps launch a movement to ‘destroy passersby,’ and permanently changes popular culture. Coincidence? A Narrator with a Ph.D. joins Sex Pistols’ manager and self-proclaimed mastermind, Malcolm McLaren, to recount an alternative history of the 20th century via the Sex Pistols, the Cabaret Voltaire, the May ’68 riots, and a handful of medieval heretics. Lipstick Traces is a physically ecstatic and intellectually nervy theatrical vision of “movements in culture that raised no monuments… movements that barely left a trace.” |

Reviews
“Outcry’s production—their first adult production since the pandemic began –is absolutely fantastic, just jaw-droppingly good. ... I could go on, and on, but simply put, it’s hard to imagine a better, more energetic group for taking on Lipstick Traces than Outcry Theatre, and it was a privilege and a pleasure to watch. I’ll be waiting on the edge of my seat to see what the company comes up with next.”
-Jill Sweeney, Onstage NTX
“I have seen previous Outcry Theatre productions and have always been impressed by the total commitment to the material on the part of the actors. Lipstick Traces is no exception. The ensemble work is crisp and, considering how continuous and frenetic the energy is, the momentum never lags. The precision the cast exhibits in some of the dance numbers is breathtaking. Yet, each cast member gets their moment to shine, and they revel in that opportunity. ... This show is amazingly well done.”
-Chris Hauge, John Garcia's The Column
“Evincing a piece like Lipstick Traces could have been a nightmare, but you’d never know from this sublime, chaotic, defiant performance. I know I’m tripping on adjectives, but need to do justice to this remarkable theatre troupe, and this cyclonic piece in particular.”
