COSTUME DESIGN
June 1-5, 9am-12pm | Ages 10-18 | $125
Taught by Karsten Schaffhauser
Costumes tell stories. They allow audiences to know a character before they’ve spoken a single word. Learn how colors, fabrics, and shapes can establish personality, social status, and setting. Explore topics of symbolism, class, geography, and culture in relation to fashion history, and analyze iconic costumes. Get hands-on experience working with many different costume pieces and materials to design in collaboration, just like in real costume shops. By the end of the week, students will have designed and presented their own costume plot! Ends with a presentation for family members at the Outcry Theatre Rehearsal Location.

Karsten Schaffhauser is a recent graduate of Outcry Youth Theater and Rockwall High School. Working artistically across the DFW Metroplex and in Austin, they are an aspiring actor, playwright, and director. They've performed in over thirty-five productions, directed three, and written one. Over the course of their 8 years of acting and vocal training, they have earned 4 All-Star Cast awards and served as a member of internationally recognized contemporary a cappella groups Sting and Walk the Line. For their senior project, they wrote, cast, designed, directed, and produced their own 30-minute play, Annabel Lee, an adaptation of the poem by Edgar Allen Poe. It went on to win first place in Rockwall's 2023 Senior Directed Play Festival, with both leading actors receiving Best Performer awards at the competition.
